by Professor Dragan A. Savić FREng, FICE, FCIWEM
Co-Director, Centre for Water Systems
Director, EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Informatics: Science and Engineering (WISE CDT), University of Exeter, UK

More than half of the world's population lives in a city, and this proportion is projected to grow over 70 percent by 2050. Critical infrastructure, including water, energy and transport systems, is essential in ensuring the wellbeing of the population. Protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring continued and efficient operation is and will be an important part of future ‘Smart City’ ecosystems. However, water and wastewater infrastructure systems are often overlooked when ‘Smart City’ initiatives are considered. This talk will address some of the smart city issues and how they fit with the ‘smart water’ infrastructure concepts. Examples of open data sources and their use in water system management will also be shown.
